Richard Avedon: Carmen, Homage to Munkasci, 1957,

homage to Richard Avedon, black and white, SLC, UT

Paul Duane: Natalie Wall, 2012

Richard Avedon is my photography hero. Occasionally, I like to make a humble attempt at recreating – or at least – paying homage to his work.

I have always loved the way Avedon’s model seems lofted by her umbrella, a sort of real life Mary Poppins. She floats over the curb.

Natalie was a wonderful subject. I am convinced Avedon had an antigravity machine near by – try as I may, I never quite captured the gentle flotation of his model.

It is noteworthy that Avedon’t piece was an homage to the photographer Martin Munkácsi, making mine an homage of am homage.

A few years after I put this photo out – a photographer friend noticed something I had missed all along – note the dark window in the building in the top right corner of Avedon’s photograph.  Some how – some way – a window was similarly dark in the top right of my building, too.
